Broken Camera and stuff

ENG: People who follow me on Facebook already know, that my camera is broken. Maybe I can find a way for sending the camera in for repair here in Holland, if not I will have to wait till I return to Germany for christmas. I still have warranty so I think there won't be any problem. But I'm currently very busy with uni, assignments and stuff anyway. But don't worry, my blog will still be active, even though I don't have a camera anymore, so stay tuned!

ENG: As a student you can either exist on instant noodles and beer, nothing at all or you have to learn to cook. Personally, I try to find a “healthy“ mix of everything I just mentioned. But now, I have really started loving to cook. I love to chop things, to mix everything together and the sound of twisting a peppershaker. Now that it’s getting colder, my favourite meal pre-cooked in the fridge is soup!  Soups are the best, especially after long night outs coming back at 5am when you are totally wasted.

My flatmates have dubbed me the ‘Soup Queen,’ their favourite being my pumpkin soup so I decided to write down the recipe and take some pictures while cooking. It’s healthy and even vegan, so let’s go!

Peel 2 carrots and 2 potatoes, then dice them.

Cut the pumpkin in half, remove the pumpkin seeds and dice it as well. Pumpkins can be really hard to cut, for people who are as weak as me I recommend putting the pumpkin in the oven at 50-80°C (120-180°F) for around 30minutes. That way it will become softer and easier to cut.

Dice 1 onion, a piece of ginger and 1-2 cloves of garlic (depending on your taste, I personally don’t like too much garlic). It doesn’t need to be that finely chopped because in the end we will puree everything anyway.

Now use a big pot to fry the onion, ginger and garlic in oil.

Add the carrot, potato and pumpkin pieces and let them fry for a few minutes as well. It’s no problem if it starts to smell a bit burned.

Add water so that all the ingredients are submerged and 2 cubes of vegetables bouillon (stock).

Then let it cook until everything gets soft. It might take you 20-30minutes, depending on how small you chopped the vegetables. After this use a blender to puree everything.

Last step is just adding some cream and seasoning to your soup. I used soya-cream, salt, pepper, chilli and a bit of curry powder. You can also add some water if you want your soup more liquid. I prefer it thicker because it kinda reminds me of baby food. But now, you’re done!

Enjoy you’re pumpkin soup and tell me if you liked it. I would love to see some food porn pictures, if you tried my recipe. Share the picture on Instagram with the hashtags #lanigraphie #lanifoodie

tips for first year university students

ENG: It’s mid-october which means that for most of you the new semester will start soon. I want to give some wise advice to all the new first-year students.

1. introduction events
I highly recommend attending these events, because they make it easier to get in touch with other students. The first few weeks are very important because at this time people are the most sociable and groups start to be formed. After this it might be a little harder to interact with others and from experience the first people you meet there are often those who will accompany you throughout your study.

2. hang out with cool people
You wanna hear a funny story about my first day at uni? Like everyone, I was really disoriented and helpless and I heard someone behind me shouting: „Is there anyone else who studies business administration?“ I was so happy about it and answered „Yes, I’am!“. I turned around and found out that the woman was 45 years old. She started clinging on to me because I was the only person she knew which made it even harder for me to find friends of my age because on the surface we already looked like the dream-duo. She even started to send me text messages asking whether I could save her a seat next to me so that she could sit there. I finally managed to get rid of her and find friends my age, but the moral of the story is: Look for people who fit to you.

3. introduce each other
Getting in touch with people can be hard, especially if you are shy. You just talked to the guy sitting next to you, and your friend arrived and they don’t know each other yet? Introduce him to your friend. Networking is really important because it will make studying easier and make uni more fun.

4. student parties
I know these parties sometimes aren’t good at all: totally crowded, music played from the 90s and completely drunk students everywhere. Even though these parties can be pretty bad, I suggest you to go there if you have nothing better to do. If you’re drunk it will be easier to establish contacts. Besides, you will have some funny topics to talk about if classes are very boring.

5. study hard
The first year is really hard and if you plan to do an exchange year it is always better to have good grades. If you are about to give up your studies always ask yourself: „Do I really want to be one of many loser drop-outs or do I want to stubbornly pursue my goals?"  Honestly, even though I’m in my third year I still struggle with this issue.

6. don’t care about the standard period of study
I said you should study hard but also try to find a healthy amount of pressure. Don’t lose your head just because there are people who study more than you do.
